Food Poisoning

Food poisoning also called foodborne illness is infection or irritation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract caused by food or beverages that contain harmful bacteria, parasites, viruses, or chemicals. The symptoms and severity of food poisoning vary, depending on which bacteria or virus has contaminated the food. Most foodborne illnesses are acute. Rarely, foodborne illnesses may lead to more serious complications. While the very young, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk of serious consequences from most foodborne illnesses. The majority of foodborne illnesses are caused by harmful bacteria and viruses. Some parasites and chemicals also cause foodborne illnesses. Following four simple steps at home — Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill — can help protect you and your loved ones from food poisoning.
